Mosquitoes in Manchester Square

The daytime ankle biters, small black-and-white mosquitoes that breed in a bottle cap's worth of water, are on the state's list for the City of Los Angeles. The state reports them for the city as a whole, not neighborhood by neighborhood, so if you're getting bitten around the ankles in the daytime in Manchester Square, they're the likely culprit.

What that means for your yard

Small lots close together, where yard drains, tires and plant saucers are the usual sources. The Greater LA district reported West Nile–positive mosquitoes in 3 of the 23 South LA neighborhoods this year.

Ankle biters rarely fly far from where they hatched. If you're getting bitten on the patio in the afternoon, the water they came from is probably in your yard or the one next door.
